Karen O’Kane is a textile artist, hand painting silk with a cold resist technique and using the steamed silk to make a range of home furnishings including statement piece lights, lampshades and silk accessories for the home. Karen, from the Potteries in England, was introduced to a wide variety of crafts by her artist grandmother. After studying psychology at Edinburgh University, Karen used these crafts in her work before settling in Ramelton, Co Donegal and establishing kokodesigns studio in 2010
In 2016 Karen began to work with a fabric printer in Donegal to sustainably print some of her work on bamboo fabric which allows her work to be sold in retail outlets, while still undertaking one off commissions for residential and commercial interior design projects and gallery collections.
Karen’s designs are bold and vibrant and are inspired by her love of her natural Irish environment and the unpredictability and texture of the medium.
